Two people from Sturgis Michigan managed to survive the typhoon in the Philippines.

Carter Brown, 23, even "Facetimed" his father after escaping the devastation in the city of Tacloban.

Brown's father, Mike, told WOOD TV that Carter apparently had to walk some distance before finding a cargo plane with several other people that would take them to Manila.

Carter Brown had been in the Philippines with Elsa Thomasma, 24, both volunteering for the GoAbroad Foundation. He said that she also survived.

Both of them are GVSU graduates.
