Five people are being charged for their involvement in what authorities say was a multimillion-dollar shoplifting ring headquartered in Hazel Park.
Detectives with the Oakland County Narcotics Enforcement Team began their investigation into a possible methamphetamine operation after they received reports of three women stealing cold medicines and other over-the-counter drugs from area stores.
That investigation, though, led authorities to a warehouse in Hazel Park which contained more than three-million-dollars worth of stolen merchandise from stores including Victoria's Secret, CVS and Walgreens. Officials say the women would shoplift up to 15-thousand-dollars worth of merchandise a day.
Sheriff Mike Bouchard said the operation stretched from metro Detroit to Las Vegas and possibly other cities.
The trio, along with two men, have each been charged with organized retail crime and receiving and concealing stolen property. All five suspects were released on bond. They'll be back in court April 25.
Additional charges are pending review by the Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office. Bouchard said there may be additional suspects as an investigations continues.
